It's a cliché to say that prevention is better than cure, however it's also true! All of us as we get older experience various medical conditions and there are lots of things that your GP can do to detect these problems early and help delay them or prevent them entirely. For example, cancer prevention activities, such as skin checks, Pap smears, bowel checks, and a range of blood tests can be very helpful to head off trouble early. Doctors also are very focused on trying to reduce what they call cardiovascular riskby helping people to stop smoking, reduce their diabetes risk, manage blood pressure, undertake regular exercise, eat healthily, and undertake a range of other preventive activities.

Mental health problems are very common in the community, for example depression, anxiety, and drug and alcohol problems too. Sometimes mental illness runs in families, and sometimes they are caused or made worse by the stresses of life such as work pressures or relationship problems. People coping with serious physical illness also often experience mental health issues too. In this section, Dr Grant Blashki talks openly about common mental disorders, their causes and the treatments which are known to be helpful based on research evidence.
